MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — What’s on the National Register of Historic Places and has free parking? No, it’s not Mall of America. It’s your next must-see stop in the Twin Cities: Midtown Global Market.
Between the booths filled with knit hats, Mexican candy, and cheap t-shirts you’ll find food. A lot of it. It’s like a giant ethnic food court and it’s calling your name. In fact, this building is the second largest in Minnesota — right behind Mall of America, of course.
There’s Italian, West Indies, and Mexican booths just to name a few. Don’t leave without ordering an oversize bowl of steaming Vietnamese Pho at Pham’s Deli (said to be a favorite of hometown boy Andrew Zimmern from the Travel Channel) then make your way over to Manny’s for one of the city’s most sought-after sandwiches: the pork torta. It will make you think twice about the boring ham and cheese sandwiches of your past.
After lunch, pick up Arabic, Scandinavian, or organic groceries to go. If you’re lucky, you may run into a lively salsa lesson or an acoustic concert on your way out. While MOA (that’s Mall of American for you outsiders) has an extensive food court filled with every chain restaurant under the sun and football-stadium-sized parking lots, this is the kind of mall that Minnesotans should flock to. There isn’t a better way to spend a weekend meal in the Twin Cities.
