CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – In church, it’s the father, the son, and the holy spirit. In Chicago, the holy trinity of Italian beef, deep dish pizza, and hot dogs reign supreme. Claiming where you can find the best is like declaring a religion.
I’m not going to say that Superdawg has the best dogs in Chicago (for fear of my life). But if you’re looking for a good dog, possibly even a super one, you’ll find it here. An extra-special copyrighted recipe from the 1940s means you won’t find a weenie like it anywhere in the world. It’s bigger, smokier, and garlic-ier.
Remember that you cannot order hot dogs here — only Superdawgs. They’re pretty serious about that one so be sure to clearly state that you would like a Superdawg when ordering from the carhop. Upon delivery, you’ll find crinkle-cut fries inside plus a Superdawg topped with mustard, relish, onions, and a huge pickle stuffed inside a poppy seed bun. (No ketchup in true Chicago form!)
The Travel Channel and Food Network have not ignored this Windy City staple on special features like America’s 101 Tastiest Places to Chow Down, Hot Dog Paradise, and Hot Dog Heavens. Superdawg makes a great story because of its great food and its great history. A ridiculously cute old couple started the family business as high school sweetheart newlyweds in the 1940s.
Pull away with a full stomach and a fuzzy feeling. The box says it plain and clear: “From the bottom of my pure beef heart. Thanks for stopping!”
